Routine cleaning is part of the regular maintenance of a Macbook notebook computer. These simple steps will help to keep your Macbook looking like new!

Laptop maintenance is important to keeping the Macbook working properly. Dirt and dust can collect on the computer and cause problems with the electronics over time. If dirt and dust clog the air vents of the Macbook the computer will run at high temperatures, which can permanently damage the system electronics. The process of cleaning a Macbook is short, and will only take about 5 to 10 minutes on a weekly basis. The following are simple tips to make cleaning a Macbook quick and easy.

Prepare to Clean the Macbook

Before attempting any cleaning, be sure that the computer is turned off and completely cooled down. This should take no more than 5 minutes. There’s no need to wait for cooling off if the computer was already off. As a final preparation step, detach the power cord from the computer.

The purpose of allowing the Macbook to cool down is to ensure that all of the parts inside of the machine are at room temperature. This prevents damage from the exposure of the warm parts to cooler temperatures.

Clean the Macbook Exterior

First, ensure that the Macbook is in the closed position. Next begin cleaning the front and back cover using a dampened, lint-free cloth. These cloths can be purchased at most computer or electronic stores, as well as online.

While cleaning the exterior of the Macbook, avoid wiping the connection ports. Failure to do so could result in irreversible damage, rendering them inoperable.

Clean the Screen and Keyboard of the Macbook

Open the laptop computer and prepare to clean the screen and keyboard. Start by wiping the screen with a new dampened, lint-free cloth. Specialized wipes for computer screens are widely available, and can be used instead of a lint-free cloth. Use long, even strokes to remove any smudges or fingerprints from the screen. Don’t forget to wipe down the housing around the screen as well.

Next, wipe down the keyboard and touchpad. Be aware that the touch pad can become especially dirty from due to constant manipulation, so it may need extra attention during the cleaning process.

Complete the Cleaning Process

After cleaning, allow the computer to dry completely before returning it to operation. This should only take a couple of minutes at most. Finally, reattach the power cord and continue operation.

The almost seamless design of the Macbook makes it very easy to clean. Taking a few minutes each week to clean the computer can help to avoid costly problems in the future.
