In Georgia, becoming a certified nurse’s assistant (CNA) can be accomplished by attending a 85-hour, state-approved training program at one of the local colleges or universities. Following the course, the candidate must successfully pas the state exam in order to become certified. Recertification is required every two years. The expected salary for CNAs is from almost $10/hour to close to $14/hour, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Find a CNA School in Georgia
The State of Georgia provides a list of schools that offer the 85-hour training course for CNA certification. There are a variety of formats offered, including day and evening classes, weekend classes, and online classes. These schedules are sure to fit almost any schedule. Courses start year round, depending on the school.
The state of Georgia also requires that CNAs complete clinical coursework as part of their training. It’s a good idea to find a program that also provides an internship along with the coursework. By doing so, the candidate can gain real life experience in a professional medical environment.
Complete the Georgia CNA Course
Once a school is selected, simply complete the registration process and begin the course. Attendance is extremely important, as CNA courses tend to move quickly. If a day of class is missed, it can be like missing a week or two of a regular college course.
In addition to regular attendance, be sure to set aside enough time to study outside of class. Understandably, this can be difficult with family and work schedules, but doing so provides he best chances of successful completion of the program and passing the state exam.
Take the Georgia CNA Exam
Once the course is completed, the school will provide an application for the state exam. Most schools also provide exam study materials and preparation. Be sure to complete the exam application through the school in a timely fashion for the best chances of getting the preferred testing date.
As part of the exam application process, a criminal background check is performed on all applicants. IN addition, candidates must provide proof from a physician that they are free of tuberculosis, and are capable of the physical job demands of a CNA.
After applying for the exam, the candidate will receive confirmation of the test date, time, and location. Arrive at the test location at least 15 minutes before the scheduled exam time, prepared with the necessary identification.
Find a Georgia CNA Job
While waiting for the CNA exam date to arrive, consider starting a job search. First, prepare a resume. Next, check the job boards at the school and online. Many schools offer job placement assistance. Once a passing score is received on the exam, the candidate’s name is placed in the CNA registry, and they are officially a CNA.
Becoming a CNA isn’t for everyone. However, if after careful consideration this seems like the perfect career path, simply follow these tips to become a CNA. Realistically, the process can take anywhere from 3 months to a year.
